One thing to know before you order

Regular Swedish Fish have no gelatin and no fat, which is why they turn up on every accidentally-vegan list on the internet. Chews are a different recipe. There's gelatin and palm oil in these, so they aren't vegetarian or vegan, and the label doesn't say which animal the gelatin came from. If that's a dealbreaker, go grab the original red fish instead. No hard feelings.

Allergen information

No milk, no egg, no wheat, no soy, no peanuts, no tree nuts, no sesame, no shellfish. And despite everything about the name, no fish. There's no gluten free claim printed on the bag, so if you avoid gluten on medical advice, treat this as uncertified rather than safe. The gelatin rules it out for vegetarians and vegans. Ingredients

Sugar, glucose syrup, palm oil, less than 2% of gelatin, glycerol, citric acid, glyceryl monostearate, natural and artificial flavor, Red 40, Yellow 6, Yellow 5, Blue 1, sunflower lecithin, carnauba wax. Contains a bioengineered food ingredient.

Nutrition

Six pieces makes a serving at 30 g, and there are about five servings in a bag. That comes to 120 calories, 2.5 g fat, 1.5 g of it saturated, no sodium at all, 25 g carbs and 24 g sugar, every gram of it added. No protein. It's candy. You knew that.

The wrappers are the whole trick

A loose gummy commits you. A wrapped one doesn't. These go in a trick-or-treat bowl, a classroom party, the dish on the front desk, a coat pocket you forget about until December. You can hand one to somebody without opening the whole bag, and the last piece comes out in the same shape as the first.

Size and storage

One 5.12 oz peg bag, 145 g. Keep it somewhere cool. Soft chews get softer in heat and can stick to the inside of the wrapper, so the glovebox in August is not the move.
